I have long promised our brilliant designer Gudrun Jobst a special Legend Press cover awards. And with the latest Legend Press Christmas party coming up I thought now may finally be the time. There is a slight twist in that I designed our first ever cover myself, in the days when Legend Press was run in a bedroom on a free PC, and Gudrun is quite rightly aware that I will happily fix the vote to ensure mine wins, whether deservedly or not (and deep down I know the answer there considering how good a designer she is, but of course I'll keep backing mine for argument's sake regardless.)
Therefore, to keep it fair I thought I would open it up for the public vote (and there'll be none of the recent phone scandals here). So here's your chance - just leave a comment to vote and let us know your favourite for the inaugural award! (Actually will also be very interesting in seeing the response).
Yours competitively,
Tom

I have already voted: for 'Here or There' -but I didn't leave any feedback -but that cover is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of design. Nice one.

Well, I thought I'd give my two pence and maybe I'll win a whole set of 'my' books. I suppose I will crit them differently and the one I have sweated the most blood and tears must be The Well-tempered Clavier, which puts it into third place for me. I think a tie in second place for S&H & 7 Days and my winner is definitely Here or there. I just like the simplicity and if I may say so myself, I think its quite a good idea. Thanks for all your input. It is always helpful to get feedback.

Not that I can win a prize, so don't worry I'm not trying to cheat, but my top three favourites are S&H, Journey and Seven Days. Funny that because the one I actually had most input in myself was Here or There and I do really like that one too - but maybe I prefer some of the others because I had less to do with the process?! If I was going to pick one that pips the post for my favourite it would be (ooh, this is hard)... Seven Days. I love the fact that all the different lives are given a snapshot each, while still being linked to each other in quite an abstract way over a background with a lot of depth - perfect for Legend Press' own unique style of short stories!

Love the photo on Remarkable Everyday but the typography leaves a bit to be desired, so Journey gets my vote.

Salt & Honey wins my vote.

The League Table so far: Salt & Honey 3, Here or There 3, Journey 2, Seven Days 1.
Keep the votes coming in, remember also chance to win a prize and I should go out and buy the trophy.
You're not doing too bad so far Gudders but we'll see!

Hhhmmm. This is a difficult one. I really like the cover of Salt and Honey because I loved the book and have fond memories of reading it on a beach! However, I'd have to say that my favourite of all LP's covers is that of Rebecca Strong's Here and There, firstly because she is my friend (not that I'm biased in any way), secondly because it's quite simple, clean and modern, and thirdly, I like the un-centralised alignment of the text on the back cover...it's the small things that matter to editors. Don't think you have to fear for your job Gudrun with Tom's effort ;)

Yay for Salt&Honey, three votes so far! Any more takers on this? should we introduce a league table? lol

Got to be Salt and Honey as it's one I'd pick up off a shelf, though also love The Well Tempered Clavier. Colours & textures of S&H evoke a sense of something and I'd want to find out more.

My vote goes to 'Journey' as well. There's just something appealing about the layering and the title-font and the combination of colours.

Slightly concerned Mr Jobs but keep everyone keep the votes coming. And I think a prize is a good idea - will begrudgingly exclude myself from winning it (though may find one 'Tim Chimbers' scooping it - just joking, Legend Press staff are definitely ruled out). Will pick out a winner and let them have a free set of books, can't say any better than that!
If you haven't left email watch out for announcement so we have details to send on. Keep going, want to break some type of voting record.

The cover of The Well-Tempered Clavier makes me horny. But not as much as Journey. My vote is for Here or There.

This is a tricky one for me as I've seen most of them being developed and created along the way and have been asked on numerous occasions; whether it appeals to me, what the cover is saying to me and if I'd pick it up off the shelf of a book store (and if not, why not goddammit!).... Therefore I'm going to have to go with my all time favourtie "Salt & Honey" - sorry Tom, no contest really!

For me it was between The Remakable Everyday, Journey, Here or there and 7 days. I'm going to have to go with 7days as it appeals to me. If I were to see it on a bookstore shelf, I would have to pick it up and find out what was behind it.

My vote goes to "Journey" love the colours and how it grabs your attention (it is also a good portrait of the story).

Tom, you’ve been shortlisted so many times that you’re now planning to award yourself prizes! I told Ms Jobst myself how impressed I was with the cover for Seven Days at the book launch. But if I’m going to be completely impartial and look at all these covers (which are all lovely by the way, yes I know I sound like a primary school teacher here) then I’d go for the one which stands out the most and which I’d pick out if I saw it in a bookshop and that’s Salt&Honey. I love covers with textures and bright colours, but also it has a simplicity about it that makes a bold statement. Oh I’m waxing lyrical here like I was in an art gallery so I’ll just cut to the chase and ask what the prize is!

Mine is definitely Tom's effort for The Remarkable Everyday... no -- only joking Gudders, as if I'd side with him against you! It's pretty tough actually... will have to give it some more thought as I like them all in different ways but I'm not going to sit on the fence...I will pick my favourite in due course.
Tom can we please do a prize out of a hat for everyone who leaves a comment and votes? I like prizes. Don't worry, I'm aware it wouldn't be fair if my name was in the hat so I'm not saying that to try and win a prize, I just like giving prizes.
