Having been introduced to the club by one of supreme authors, Nick Griffiths, over recent years the Legend Press event and the brilliant Phoenix Artists Club have been practically inseparable.
And rightly so - the Phoenix is a legendary club with none of the pretentiousness but all of the popularity and more of other private members clubs around London. Would go as far as saying old Soho at its very finest.
And much of the reason for it popularity is down to its unforgettable owner Maurice - the heart and soul of the Phoenix. We were all incredibly sad therefore to hear that after an illness Maurice has passed away.
From the fancy waistcoats, star turns on the microphone to the banter and the never tiring of calling us 'Leg-ends', Maurice will have a place in the hearts of all those that have visited the Phoenix. Thanks for the all of support, fun and entertainment.

Cleverly selecting the busiest day of the year, we went Christmas shopping on Saturday. And I forewarned that it would be no more than ten minutes before I would once again begin my monologue bemoaning the demine of the UK high street.
In fact the day was nowhere near as bad as expected, which illustrated the point further. Tills were overstaffed and by the time we reached them items were reduced by 10-30% on purchase. I even enjoyed a plate of free buscuits in one outlet (not the whole plate I should add).
But the biggest anomoly of the day was seeing a queue outside one store, Abercrombie and Fitch - like finding an underground population post-apocolypse, I imagine (having never been through an apocolyse).
And this made the point crystal clear. Yes, resources, marketing, relatively new shop etc, but the fact is the shop is styled to be completed different - it may be the branch of a huge company but it is styled as boutique. In that shop it is clear you are in an Abercrombie and Fitch and absolutely no where else (the last time I had that sense was in an Apple store, but branding is a whole different monologue).
If you had been in our office for any period of time over the last year and received a pound for every time I used the word 'boutique', you would now be bored and have enough money for an upmarket Christmas sweater.
The only aspect that the online retailers cannot offer is physical presence - an obvious sentence but one that doesn't seem to have been universally comprehended yet. Every single centimetre of store space should declare the outlet's brand, style and message. In every (insert correct unit) of airspace, the customer should be breathing in the feel of where they are – and belonging.
Now is not the time to be amending discount signs, sharpening t-shirts or playing with loyalty cards. It is time to be maverick, take a gamble, produce a huge statement directly to the customer in the space that the huge rents are paid for.
And this is why no middle way remains. The small stores have a direct route to achieve this and the huge companies, the Tesco's of this world, are the few with the power to bludgeon through as they are. But for those in the middle – they have the resources if not the speed of foot of the small independents – they need to embrace the brave boutique route quickly.
In a year's time, generic will be no more but that doesn't mean there can't still be queues.

I first discovered Legend Press by accident. A couple of months ago, when working part-time as a waitress at a local riverside pub, I almost charged a friendly table of four double for their meal and found myself blaming my mathematical blunder on the fact that I am only an English graduate. In response to this, one of the four diners confessed that he too was an English graduate and asked what I was planning on doing with this degree. I said that I wanted to start a career in publishing. At my reply, he exclaimed that he happened to own a publishing company and they had people in for work experience placements all the time; I was promptly handed a Legend Press business card by ‘Tom Chalmers, Managing Director’, and here I am.
In the interim between meeting Tom Chalmers and starting my work placement I became an avid follower of Legend Press on twitter, I frequented the Legend Press website to keep up to date with the latest news and, of course, I bought my first few Legend Press novels. Ruth Dugdall’s The Woman Before Me and Heather Peace’s All to Play For gave me great insight into what Legend Press is all about: discovering excellent new talent and publishing literary works with urgent, poignant messages, which manage to capture the mood of the moment. In the few weeks spent glutting on Legend Press tweets, news and novels I did not for a minute suspect that all this dynamism was emanating from just three people in a small office nestled in the labyrinthine bowels of the London Wall Buildings.
During the two weeks I spent at Legend Press I dabbled in several different elements of the publishing process: I complied spreadsheets of research for the purposes of publicity, I helped format New Generation Publishing books ready for printing, and I worked my way through a range of submissions, learning as I went along how to determine whether a piece has the qualities Legend Press look for. Every element of the publishing process that I experienced first hand gave me a deeper understanding of what it takes to transform a submission with promise into a novel that sells.
Moreover, I was fortunate enough to be working with Legend Press on the date of the annual Luke Bitmead Bursary Award ceremony and so had the privilege of attending the event as a temporary member of the Legend Press team. After getting over the slightly dizzying realisation that I was in the presence of real published authors and other industry professionals, I relaxed and really enjoyed myself: author and Luke Bitmead Bursary Award judge Sam Mills very kindly shared her chips with me and I had a lovely chat with previous Luke Bitmead Award winner Andrew Blackman. It was fantastic to feel part of an event that offers fresh talent the attention and encouragement it deserves and I hope the award continues to go from strength-to-strength.
I am incredibly grateful to the Legend Press team and everyone else connected with Legend Press who I met during my two-week placement for making me feel so welcome. As many fellow work experience people have mentioned before in their own blog entries, not once was I made to feel like merely the designated coffee maker and errand runner. There is something very special about Legend Press and the people behind it and I thank them for making my experience so memorable.

'Having been somewhat sceptical about self-publishing, I attended Legend Press's workshop focussed on self-publishing, which promised a frank discussion on the pros and cons of this publishing option. As Legend Press was my first publishing work experience I approached my two weeks with a small amount of trepidation. I had been worrying myself with vague notions that I would find I hated it and would never want to work in publishing again.
I needn’t have worried however as everyone at Legend Press was lovely and my two weeks were a great introduction to working in publishing. I was set to work right away doing research and I was kept busy for the rest of the weeks with formatting, reading submissions, considering cover designs and sending out emails.
One of the benefits of doing work experience in a small office is that you are able to see how aspects of a publishing company interact and try out tasks from different areas. I did have one problem which occurred when it came to persuading the computer to do what I wanted rather than sending me to ebay and beyond every time I tried to use google but after some wrangling I soon learned tricks that allowed me to traverse the internet unimpeded.
The idiosyncrasies of the office technology aside however I had a great experience and I am looking forward building on this and hopefully making my way into a career in publishing.

Nine o’clock, Monday morning, and I am quite undone. Faced with a two-hour lecture, on a subject about which my knowledge is less than total, my only prop – my Power Point presentation – is playing up. I look around at the serried ranks of eager young faces, all determined to get their money’s worth for the big fat fee they’ll be paying until the year 2058, beads of sweat appearing on my brow: without Power Point I’m finished.
Now I recall the advice given by my new boss: “don’t let them see the fear in your eyes.” I thought she was joking.
“I never wanted to be a lecturer!” I want to sob, falling to my knees and crying for mercy – “I just want to write. The fact my agent is unable to sell my new novel is all his fault, and so we’re stuck here, in this sweaty lecture room, for two hours every Monday morning for the next twelve weeks, so get used to it, and stop looking at me like that, and-“
“Hi,” says a fellow lecturer, whose position I have taken, and who has agreed to hold my hand while I work out exactly what it is that lecturers do. “Everything all right? Need a hand?”
“Um – please.”
Somehow, with the help of my saviour, I get through the first lecture; throughout I examine the student’s faces for signs of mirth, or disbelief, but the default expression appears to be apathy. I can handle apathy: I’m a father myself. Elated by my great success, I explain to my baby-sitter (who is least a decade younger than I am) that I have no further need of her; I will face the next class alone. Legend Press Workshops hit the road on Saturday and we held our first event outside of London, this time in Birmingham.
We were very pleased to have a fantastic panel, including three great writers and an agent, and from the feedback it seems all enjoyed it and found it of use - which is great to hear!
Really enjoyed putting the event on in Birmingham and with further events in Dublin and three more before the end of the year in London, our Writers' Workshops seem to be going from strength-to-strength!

Since launching at the start of the year, we are delighted that our Writer Workshops have proven such a great success. Providing direct contact with top book industry professionals – from agents and editors, to authors and marketers – they offer a unique opportunity to aspiring writers.
We have announced a number of further Writers’ Workshops in London, with various focuses from getting an agent and marketing to scriptwriting and self-publishing, and also Getting Published events in Birmingham and Dublin.
And now those booking places prior to 1st July will be able to send in the first chapter of any current, or past, work and Legend Press’s editorial team will provide a written appraisal, including commenting on its content, style, pace, potential and market.

I was encouraged to apply for a work experience placement at Legend Press after attending a talk given by Nick Griffiths (author of the really rather good 'Looking For Mrs Dextrose') at the University of Southampton in which he had nothing but kind words for the Legend team. I now understand the reasons for his affections. I have been interested in pursuing a career in publishing for some time, and I’m glad to say that my time at Legend has not deterred me from this course in the slightest. I am now quite sure that this is the line of work I want to be in.
Quietly eavesdropping on the office banter from my little computer in the corner has been most enjoyable – as has reading through some of the less-than-literary submissions (who knew that so many unpublished authors like to hone their craft by writing graphic sex scenes?). Sending endless generic e-mails was somewhat less thrilling, but what else should an intern expect? At least I wasn’t being sent out on endless coffee runs! My time at Legend has provided me with valuable experience in the field, and I am grateful to Tom, Lucy and Lauren for giving me the opportunity and for being so warm and welcoming during my brief tenure here.

Lucy and myself greatly enjoyed our annual pilgrimage to Eton College for their 4th June Celebrations (held on the closest Wednesday to the 4th June each year).
We had some issues getting everything to the College, and fair to say I looked on the worst side of disshevelled all day, but once set-up it was another excellent, and thankfully sunny, day.
We were there for the fourth consecutive year selling the books of one Old Etonian Bill Coles (whose most recent novel, SIMON COWELL: THE SEX FACTOR, you can order here).
And we even on several occasions heard those dream words to the ears of any publisher/bookseller: 'You made me buy a whole pile of books last year.' And we're confident the same people, and more, will be saying the same this time next year...
