Two new books for October!

Kotting2

We are pleased to announce two exciting books to be published in October: Operation Underworld by Paddy Kelly (3rd October 09) and Babble and Squeak by Mark Kotting (31st October 09).

Legend Press signed up Babble and Squeak by Mark Kotting after being introduced to his writing through the short story Mark wrote for our 4th short story collection 8 Rooms published in April 2009. The novel is a dark, quirky and hilarious novel about a fish and chip man called Joe. As well as being a London cabbie, Mark has written several plays for BBC Radio 3 and 5. His debut novel Nappy Rash was published by Wrecking Ball Press and was described by comedian Sean Lock as ‘bleak, funny and poetic.

Operation Underworld by Paddy Kelly is a novel, covering a unique aspect of the American underworld at the time of World War One, including the navy, CIA and high profile gangsters working in conjunction for national security. Paddy is a successful professional writer with a strong online following.

New website for YouWriteOn scheme - www.newgenerationpublishing.info

Images

An update on one of our partnerships – with UK leading writers’ site YouWriteOn. We launched the free publishing service last Autumn, offering the chance for writers to take advantage of POD technology and the possibilities of self-publishing with wider author choice on covers etc. We were absolutely inundated with the response and were delighted by a number of success stories - including one author being in the top ten for titles sold by Blackwell’s in Scotland, another selling over 2,000 copies of her novel and numerous cases of great media coverage.

We also faced many great challenges, from implementing the most efficient systems to submission of files for production. As a result, we have added a number of new features which are ensuring the smooth running of the project and to provide clarity for customers have created a separate name for the service, New Generation Publishing.

Furthermore, we have created a dedicated website, www.newgenerationpublishing.info, which details the service additions, provides clear submission guidelines, details some of the successes to date and offers a comprehensive FAQ to answer writer questions.

We’re very pleased to be working with YouWriteOn on this ambitious project and hope it can go from strength to strength, offering a new avenue of success for authors.

Tom judges short story competition

Hemcats This month Tom has been helping judge an international short story competition organised by Chapter One Promotions.

Tom comments: I was delighted to judge the short story competition this year. I was unsure and interested in what we would receive - I thought there would be a great response though you can never be certain on the direction guidelined submissions will take.

What we received was excellent - a fantastic range of stories covering a multitude of styles, angles and themes. The average quality of writing was very high with very few dipping below a highly competent mark. There were some which were enjoyable to read and others that clearly stood out as having that little bit of extra edge.

Particularly covering such a range, it was difficult to choose winners and on a different day I could have swayed differently. But we really liked the ones we chose for winning places and are confident they each offer something very special."

The winners of the competition were:

First Place: The Shed by Robert Grossmith
Second Place: Witness by Mary Colvin
Third Place: After the Storm by Catriona Graham

London Book Fair

Lbf It has been a busy book fair for Legend Press and Paperbooks this year, with lots of interesting meetings over the 3 days. Tom has been busy with a marathon of appointments filling all three days, speaking about rights, sales and most areas of the business - despite losing his voice on the way.

This was my second London Book Fair and it was fantastic to meet so many literary agents excited about their up and coming books, which could possibly be Legend Press or Paperbooks titles  of the future.

Lauren has been busy raising awareness of our fast-developing Exclusively Independent project, meeting fellow independent publishers to discuss their involvement with the initiative and increase submissions for the scheme. It was great to see publishers really excited about the project and look forward to seeing the new developments. Not all hard work, we also attended the Turnaround 25th birthday celebration at Kings Cross.

Dramatic discovery at Legend Press Towers

SelleckMagnum The Legend Press team made a dramatic discovery this morning on entering the office building. We were surprised to see the stairwell filled with police, which we initially thought was over cautiousness due to our proximity to today's London riots. However, we were surprised to see the doors of the office across the corridor wide open, which normally are padlocked and cobwebbed over.

Sat on a seat in handcuffs surrounded by police was a grey gentleman with a rather iconic moustache. We then realised it was none other than Lord Lucan, who it was later revealed has been hiding in Shoreditch in the room next door for over 2 years.

Work experience - Blog

LP_icon_with white space Hi all,

My work experience at Legend Press and Paperbooks has been a breath of fresh air. Having previously spent time at two multinational publishers, it was great to find a really close-knit (and youthful) team who made me feel welcome from the minute I stepped through the door, despite Lucy’s evident astonishment that this was the day I was supposed to be starting. My jobs have been varied and gratifying, from reading submissions to pitching Exclusively Independent to bookshops nationwide, to organising book signings and selling ‘On the Holloway Road’. Particularly memorable was a thwarted quest with the team to find the world’s best bagels, followed by a fairly dismal performance at a pub quiz organised by Nick Griffiths, one of Legend’s authors, and an (unsuccessful) attempt by the team from moonpig.com to headhunt me. All-in-all, as well as learning a great deal, I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time here, so-much-so that I stayed a bit longer than the two weeks I originally signed up for. I can only wish every success to Legend Press and Paperbooks who should be, in my humble opinion, destined for great things.

Jon

Number 100,001!!

Images Not sales of a particular book yet - though we hope that is to come as soon as possible - but I checked our web stats yesterday (as only a work obsessed lunatic would do on a Sunday) and was pleased to see we had had our 100,001 visitor to the Legend Press website!

The new website was launched at the end of 2007 and so I don't think that's bad going at all for under 18 months - though we want the numbers to grow and grow as we press onwards. As part of that we'll be constantly looking at new ideas to make the website more entertaining, useful, informative, interactive etc - and of course making sure we publish an increasing number of fantastic, successful books to draw viewers in!

Anyway, a positive note for a Monday morning with the sun out for a change – hopefully a good sign for the week to come!

Tom

Legend Press and Paperbooks excel at quiz!

Lauren image Last week we took part in the Popbitch quiz in the Lord Nelson pub, Southwark. The quizmaster, our very own Nick Griffiths, (author of In the Footsteps of Harrison Dextrose and Who Goes There), wrote some very difficult questions - with a whole round dedicated to serial killers (maybe we should be worried!)

In the end we came a respectable 7th (out of 8) thanks to some harsh marking and controversy over a dalek head of our most useless team mate (who shall remain nameless!). Our excellent placing won us a brilliant array of cd's including the Alan Titchmarsh collection (nicely placed next to Lauren in the photo). 'Music for housewives' was taken away by our company secretary, much to his glee!

Joe's Work Experience - A story of submissions, locksmiths and Nicholas Parsons

Nicholas parsons

Hello there

I'm Joe, currently on my last day of work experience here at Legend Press and Paperbooks. I'm a third-year student at Kingston University and soon to be a student at City where I'm going to do an MA in Publishing. I've been thinking about going in to publishing for a couple of years now but these last two weeks have been my first real experience of it. And luckily, especially seeing as I've already organised my course, I've loved it. I've mostly been looking at submissions and helping to research certain things, which I've really enjoyed, but I've also learnt loads from just listening to and watching what goes on in the office of an independent publisher like Legend Press and Paperbooks.

My highlight: Reading submissions - This has been great. As someone that loves writing and feels strongly about new and orginal writing, it has been a great feeling to read something brilliant that has moved me and pass it on to Tom or Lucy with my words of praise.

My lowlight: Embarrassingly turning up two hours late on my last day (today) - A long story involving drunk flatmates, broken keys, locksmiths and an evacuation from St Paul's station.

My funniest moment: Revealing in a conversation about Nick Griffith's Who Goes There that I'm a total Doctor Who geek - My knowledge that Nicholas Parsons appeared in the 1989 seventh doctor serial The Curse of Fenric was what gave me away...

Anyway, that's all. Thanks to everyone at Legend and Paperbooks for having me and hopefully I'll be back here soon.

Joe

Finally some love in the Amazon

Images Thought I'd end the week on a positive note (thinking of starting to avoid news, at least when sober, as only seems depressing at the moment - miraculous air crash escape this morning aside). Have bemoaned in the past that for all the noise of supporting independents etc we were doing less than 1% of business through Amazon. Well, not completely sure what has changed, but had a record Christmas through the online mammoth - worked out at around 10% of our book sales.

Look forward to hopefully keeping this going in 2009 and using that as the springboard for multiplying these sales figures several times over. And it's not just through Amazon, we want to work with all our existing main outlets to find new highs and to find new outlets through which we can make huge successes of all our books. Here's to a top selling 2009 – and hope by the end of the year to be reading about it!

Tom

New year new location!

Christmas Song of the Day: Santa Claus is coming to Town

Christmas tip of the day: Have a warm glass of mulled wine...preferably by a fire!

Company best bit of the year: It has been a year of office conspiricies and debates... from the serious of who should be the new mayor of London, to the stupid... who should win the Apprentice. Tom's sometimes worrying adoration of Raef (which if I remember rightly promoted a photo on the blog) brought the office to a near stand-still for a few minutes when he realised he had been kicked out. Other funny conspiricies include Lauren and I not understanding how they get meat into crisps... we are still puzzled!

In the Courvoisier Future 500

CV Future 500 logo It was nice to find out a couple of weeks ago that I had been included in this year's Courvoisier Future 500 list - and so also listed in the supplement covering the 500 in the Observer last Sunday (thought my feet were kept on the ground by the fact the supplement appeared to have been stolen from the paper I bought. Mr no. 499, I know who you are...)

And last night I went to the event celebrating this year's list and, although struggling slightly after a very busy working couple of weeks (despite a brief second wind from some very nice Courvoisier cocktails - I admit I didn't know what it was originally, but just a boy from Leicester etc), it was a great evening and an amazing venue just off Soho Square.

So, nice to be in the list and always heart-warming on the occasions we receive recognition for all the work we try to complete here - speaking of which, I'd better get on with!

Headline News!

LegendpressLegend Press have made headlines in the Bookseller today with our exciting new Independent Publishers initiative to encourage independent bookshops to work closer with independent publishers.

The new initiative will combine the supreme talent of authors published by independent publishers, whose work can sometimes go unnoticed, with independent bookshops who provide a unique buying environment. To do this, we will elect a panel to choose 'Independent picks of the month'. The panel will be made up of a specific selection of professional individuals within publishing - authors, publishers, retailers, etc. This project will develop a firm relationship between the two establishments and together reach a broader audience. The scheme will, in turn, compete with the larger chains and offer an alternative option to the mainstream book charts. To promote the project the scheme will offer discounts, material and events, such as book signings and readings, to the shops.

To find out more information about the project please contact Lauren at laurenparsons@legend-paperbooks.co.uk.

Back from Brussels...

Brussels1 Like a child coming back from holiday and writing a report on their travels... I have just returned from a week in Brussels, well 4 days. Had a great relaxing eating chocolate, waffles, mussels, cheese and more chocolate (it's making me hungry now thinking about it!)

Here is a picture of the Grand Place where I did most of my eating!

I have come back to a very busy office with lots of new books, and am looking forward to arranging more publicity for them. Why not pre-order your copies of our new books now! The brilliant In Dependence by Sarah Ladipo Manyika is out on 27th September and the fantastic Paperbooks new title Fat Tuesday by Gary Davison is also out on the same date!

Lucy

A word from Sarah...

Pic My two-weeks work experience here at Legend Press and Paperbooks is swiftly coming to an end and I must say it has been very enjoyable to be part of such a lively and energetic team! Throughout my time here I have gained a useful insight in the day-to-day running of an independent publishing company, which has been a great experience. The passion about what is published here is clear which creates a fresh and exciting environment to work in.

It has been very busy in the office during my time here, with the forthcoming releases of several new books, including Sarah Lapido Manyika’s, In Dependence and Nick Griffiths’s, Who Goes There, which have so far been generating a lot of interest.

As for me, it is back to University in October but in the meantime I am really looking forward to attending my first ever book launch later this month and will certainly be keeping my eye on the website for more great books in the future!

Sarah

Free samples of each book now available!

LP_icon_with white space As a new feature on the online shop you can now browse and read the start of each book before you buy! We hope these free samples will get you to try something you wouldn't normally read, or even send to others to sample!

Happy reading!

New title 'In dependence' announced...

LP_icon_with white space We are excited to announce that we have signed author Sarah Ladipo Manyika, who is based in San Francisco. The thought-provoking novel, In dependence, is to be pushed through for publication on 27th September 2008. The novel is to be backed by a major promotional campaign.

In dependence takes the reader on a rich historical journey starting with the legacy of Empire, through the post colonial period, and onto modern day Africa and its diaspora. It is through Tayo and Vanessa’s story, each with their own references to the African leaders, writers, and artists who shaped the historical period, that the author offers a new and exciting glimpse into contemporary West Africa. Tayo and Vanessa’s tragic romance mirrors the tragedy of Europe and America’s relationship with the third world. Where mutual dependence has always existed, the unfettered love affair remains an elusive dream.

Tom commented to the press: “We are really excited about publishing Sarah’s novel. It is a rich story about important issues, which we feel will engage and also challenge readers. The historically important setting of the novel is particularly relevant to today’s volatile political environment."

Paperbooks acquisition complete

HeaderleftAs reported in April, since the beginning for the year I have been speaking to PaperBooks and I'm very pleased to announce that the acquisition has been completed. For at least the initial period, we will be running Paperbooks as a separate company (Paperbooks Publishing Ltd), although it will be run from here at Legend Press's office and will sit into all the infrastructure we've painstakingly built-up over the last three years.

Although in touch, it wasn't really right to speak too much to the Paperbooks authors until complete and I'm now looking forward to making up for lost time and hope to meet them all in person over the next 2-3 weeks. There is a lot of work ahead but it's potentially a very exciting time and I can't wait to continue developing both companies to hopefully many years of a success ahead and to becoming legends of the publishing world.

A Big Weekend

Radio1_bigweekend_2006aA big thank you to Radio One for inviting me to their Big Weekend event in Kent. Had a great day on Saturday and even a rare chance to 'mix with the stars' backstage (this actually involved showing my age and only on getting home and seeing some of the highlights did I keep going, 'Oh, that was them'). But it was a great experience and I took my brother with me (as you will know in the fantastic band Hansom Pilot) who also really enjoyed the day.

Would like to give you a run down of all the bands, artists etc, though these were interspersed with a fair bit of time spent around the bar area (they did have plasma screens...) and also at the drinks hosted by Radio One Controller Andy Parfitt. It was interesting to hear Andy speak about his plans for Radio One and how he saw the future developing with their service focussed on a young market. It was also interesting to hear that I am apparently considered one of the country's 'future opinion formers'. Our thoughts are quite possibly with the country...

Was also great to meet up with a friend from uni I hadn't seen for several years. So all in all, was quite a rare treat, plus fantastic that it was such a sunny day (slight 'farmer's tan' as result). Thanks again to Radio One and I look forward to my backstage Glastonbury tickets (go on, whoever organises it...)

Can you be young with a bad hip?

Images1Last night I was kindly invited to give a talk to the Society of Young Publishers on surviving as an independent publisher. With Legend Press often having used 'the youngest-tun mainstream publisher' and talking to the SYP, it was slightly ironic that I managed to injure my hip in the day (hopefully only a slight strain - put it down to the sudden regular cycling) and had to hobble around at the speaker meeting.

But that aside it was a really nice evening and interesting to also hear Will Atkinson of Faber and Faber and the very nice owners of the Books for Cooks bookshop (where I now want to go to experience the food cooked on the premises from recipes in their range of books).

Was followed by a drink or two after and nice to have a chance to chat to people from the SYP. I was even recalling first moving to London and joining the group, and how it was quite exciting going to events and see some of the publishing scene (again clearly showing my age).

So thanks to Rachel of the SYP for inviting me and hope I managed to be of reasonable interest - although seeing me hobble slightly may have out people off starting their own publishing company!

Tom

Legend Press three-years-old today!

Images_2Seems to strange after how much has happened and so quickly, but Legend Press is officially three-years-old today! By chance I actually saw the company's certificate of incorporation yesterday, and it's stated there: founded 20th April 2005.

On that day I would have finished my day at my old work and have been at the internet cafe below my shared flat trying to put my initial plans into action. Now I'm still trying to get plans into action, I just have people to talk to about them! (And office and own computer...)

Starting out without any experience of running a company and without any money is very tough, particularly in book publishing, and there have been some hellish times to be here today, but also many great times. A huge thanks to everyone who has supported and worked with Legend Press – everyone is part of the company and can admit that we wouldn't be here without that support.

In particular wanted to say thanks to Luke Bitmead, who was the first novelist I signed up and after a great ten months working together Luke sadly died in 2006. Despite only having just started out, he showed complete faith in me and Legend Press – something as time goes on I realise was more and more special and important.

Still many obstacles to overcome but also an increasing number of opportunities for Legend Press and exciting times ahead! Here's to another 30, maybe even 300 years of Legend Press (although I hope to have retired by then for a break...)

Tom

The day after the three days before...

Image049I skipped the gym (which wasn't that much of disappointment if I'm honest) and cycled in early to start catching up on my post-fair emails. I've been in the office well over an hour and so far I have got through one day's worth - looks like there's going to be a lot of typing this morning.

But all worth it, as although I could probably sleep if I blinked too hard, we had an excellent book fair with three days packed with appointments (think I had something like 40-45 meetings over the three days - hoping the notes will all make sense today...) Our books and Legend Press generally received a huge amount of interest and there are also some exciting opportunities that have opened up to develop a worldwide sales network and digital offerings etc - more no doubt over the coming weeks as it is all put into place.

It was also nice to catch-up with friends I mainly seem to see at the book fairs and generally to be in the whole diverse, if exhausting, mix.

One slight pity was that I missed out on the Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award, announced yesterday afternoon - went to Emma Hayley of Self Made Hero. Congratulations to Emma who has done an amazing job there. Of course I am far too competitive and we are considering starting our own awards next year so I can avoid this bridesmaid role that seems to have developed!

Right, the Legend Press business is waiting - back to these emails!

Tom

2 weeks a legend....

Me_4After 2 weeks working at Legend Press anonymously, behind the guise of unnamed blogger, I felt I should formally announce myself. My name is Lucy Boguslawski and I'm the new Publishing Assistant, so feel free to contact me whenever (within reason of course!) Apologises for the dreadful picture! I scanned through my photos and this is literally the only picture of me alone. Hence dreadful santa-esque graduation robes and awful smile, whoever thought furry white material everywhere was a good idea I'll never know! I have had a really good couple of weeks working at Legend, organising lots of exciting events and speaking to lots and lots of people, whether they like it or not! I am looking forward to working on all the exciting books we have coming out this year and meeting lots more of you at events.

My first Galaxy Book Awards

ImagesWhile last year I went to the trade awards, last night was the first time I have been to the Galaxy Book Awards, as a guest of the British Council who very kindly invited me. In the end it turned out to be a very good night. It was firstly interesting walking down the red carpet for the first time surrounded by cameras flashing, paparazzi calling names, a interview going on and a surprisingly large section of the public there. And absolutely none of it with any interest in me - having hundreds of people look at you to see if you are 'anybody' and then look away dismissively when they don't know who the hell you are could cause havoc with a person's identity.

On arrival I didn't think I would know anyone and would spend a good hour immersed in the seating plan. Luckily I bumped into a friend straight away and recognised a few people I knew as the night went on.

I'm actually not a big fan of award nights as they tend to drag on with dinner and then awards while you're constrained to your table but they clearly had this in mind as to my surprise it was over fairly promptly with food already on the table.

It was all presented by Richard and Judy, sadly I didn't notice them afterwards, and they had a hugely impressive list of authors in attendance, plus the celebrity presenters/authors (I'm fairly anti-celebrity but there is just some instinct of interest in seeing them which I try and usually fail to suppress).

And so onto a couple of drinks after though managed to avoid staying too late, which was probably a good thing. A little jaded today though have enough energy to roll that square of red carpet under my desk. I believe the awards are televised on Sunday so watch out for me, no doubt caught in the most hideous pose imaginable as I believe is known as s*d's law.

Set to acquire PaperBooks

ImagesAs revealed in the Bookseller today, some exciting news – an agreement has been made for me to acquire PaperBooks, a fellow independent publisher. I've been wanting to reveal this for a while but it has obviously had to be kept top secret while discussing with Keirsten Clark, who founded the excellent trade fiction publishing company in 2006.

When they first appeared on the scene, I was aware of certain similarities with Legend Press, in terms of ethos and approach and they have a fantastic list of authors who I can't wait to work with and also to build with new commissioning.

The companies are to be run separately, while benefitting from being under the 'same roof' - through economies of scales, resources, skills and the strength of both 'brands'.

Am sure there will be much more to follow, but thought I would let our blog readers know now it's agreed and in the open. Both Legend Press and PaperBooks have hugely bright futures ahead of them and between them should grow to be central to the independent publishing and general publishing sectors. Exciting times ahead!

Second time? Shortlisted for Young Publisher of the Year

ImagesA welcome reminder that I am still just about young. That and the still lack of ability to grow convincing facial hair. Just joking, it was nice to hear this week that I've been shortlisted again for the Young Publisher of the Year Award (in fact now called the 'UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award' to be accurate).

Always nice to have recognition for Legend Press and for all those who have put so much work in, and is a nice reminder on those longer days of where the company has come. Congratulations to the others shortlisted and, with the natural competitive hat on (just a phrase, maybe surprisingly I don't actually own a 'competitive hat'), look forward to seeing who wins the prize this year!

Interviewing for Legend Press

ImagesHas been an interesting week at Legend Press. Starting out on Tuesday and all day Wednesday and Thursday I've been interviewing for the newly-created Publishing Assistant role. Has been very interesting speaking to numerous different people; certainly for me anyway, if not for them having to talk to me!

It is also incredibly hard to chose after seeing so many excellent candidates, if good for the publishing industry that there is such pool of talent available. It's also difficult over a short time to decide between people in this way. But anyway, the decision is to be made and I look forward to bringing that person into the Legend Press growing empire! Thanks to all those that took the time to come in for interview, much appreciated and good luck to everyone in their careers, whether with Legend Press or achieving great things elsewhere.

More book peddling - a great day in Huddersfield

Image043_2Image040

Despite the very early start for a Saturday and a suitcase disaster on leaving that was brilliantly dealt with by those working at the festival (can't discuss more now as promised I would write it up one day), had a great time at the Huddersfield event. Was brilliantly organised, a great idea, met many interesting and nice people, and Legend Press books were selling faster than umbrellas in this so-called national storm that's currently going on.

In fact, on the way back I wondered if this market trading was the way forward - forget this office malarky and chasing others to sell our books.

And to cap it all, they even put on a full buffet for lunch - I think that's the one time sales may have been temporarily down on the stall!

Sorry pictures are a little blurred, may have to pick up a job-lot of cameras for our next market day.

Another Legend Press stall... this time in Huddersfield

ImagesEveryone once in a while we've been allowed out as a publisher and have always very much enjoyed it - from South Bank stall, to Prince's Trust Fair and other miscellaneous events. And happily, the latest opportunity has arrived - we have a stall on Saturday as part of the Writers Day and Book Fair at Huddersfield Town Hall (click for details). Forms part of the Huddersfield Literature Festival 2008 and with all the efforts gone into it and excellent promotion it should be a great day.

Really looking forward to it and its always refreshing to be out in the public (not allowed too often!) discussing our books, Legend Press and anything else that comes to mind. So if you are anywhere near Huddersfield, come along on Saturday. Open 11am-4pm and they also have workshops running all day with a great list of authors appearing.

I may even see if I can find a snazzy waistcost in my wardrobe like the one sported be the guy pictured. Though maybe best not.

Looking forward to another great market!

To re-launch WHITE SUMMER!!!!

Lukebitmead1jpgSomething I've been struggling to keep quiet for a while – we are thrilled/excited/delighted to announce the relaunch of WHITE SUMMER on 28th June. It will be backed by a major publicity campaign and the huge following for the author, Luke Bitmead, who tragically died in October 2006, aged just 34. Following the hugely charismatic and talented Luke’s death, the Luke Bitmead Memorial Fund was set-up by Luke’s family to support fledgling writers, particularly those battling adversity to achieve their writing dream. The first beneficiary of the Fund is due to be announced in May.

WHITE SUMMER, a fast-paced, hliarious and stylish comedy, was originally launched in May 2006 and was the first novel commissioned and published by then newborn baby Legend Press. The novel generated a large cult following, partly through Luke’s nationwide book signing tour (many great, timeless memories from that summer with Luke). We also now expect to benefit from our own rapidly-risen profile and the widespread interest in Luke’s hugely entertaining and skillful work to take this book to the next level, which it fully deserves - to make it a major, major hit.

Luke was also the co-author, with Catherine Richards, of HEADING SOUTH, which launched in May 2007. Another brilliant novel!

We have discussed the prospect of relaunching WHITE SUMMER, with a wonderfully vibrant new package, for some time and couldn’t be more excited. Luke is widely acknowledged as one of the most talented young writers to emerge in recent years and it is a tragedy that he died so soon after the launch of his wonderful first novel (I also have a very good story about when he first sent the novel to me - will reveal shortly). At the time it was described by one of the main buyers as 'the best book of its type he'd came across' and now is the time to see the novel and Luke’s writing achieve its deserved success.

It will also be pleasing on a personal level as Luke was the first novelist I commissioned having started the company and he was an amazing part through those first key months - it was difficult to accept that my phone wouldn't ring any minute for another passionate and entertaining conversation on promoting the book or anything else that came to our minds. Later on reflection I realised how important and special his absolutely unswerving faith in Legend Press was - we probably wouldn't be here without it.

I would also like to thank Luke’s family who have been consistently supportive and amazingly active in the drive to continue to push Luke’s writing, through the most difficult of times. They also deserve to see Luke's writing reach the widespread success it deserves.

Can't wait to re-launch this book and will be calling on everyone for their support - one read of it and it will without doubt become the book of your summer!

Unique new patnership announced with YouWriteOn

Ywo_logo_largeWe were delighted to announce on Friday an unique new partnership with the UK's leading Arts Council-sponsored writing site - YouWriteOn.com – offering a bespoke service to its many members.

YouWriteOn is offering three different packages for those looking to self-publish – Basic, Advanced, Premier – into which Legend Press has agreed to offer services ranging from cover design, editing, text-setting, book registration, to comprehensive marketing and selling packs tailored to the customer’s individual needs. There are many self-publishing services on offer but this partnership is the first to combine the production of the book with unique industry expertise to take it to that next level – something many self-publishers, no matter how good their work, often find too difficult an obstacle to surmount.

It's a partnership we’ve been discussing for a while and we’re delighted to link up with YouWriteOn – we believe two of the most exciting new companies in our respective sectors!

It can be a giant leap from having a book, getting the right looking book, to being able to market and sell it effectively within the industry. This is where we can come in to help customer’s achieve their aims and dreams, through knowledge, skills and innovation – exactly what we’ve had to use to survive and prosper as an independent publisher in the current challenging market.

Aside from our own rapidly-growing and cherished publishing list, we’re also delighted to be able to give more aspiring writers a helping hand making their mark – after all they are the basic lifeblood of a thriving book industry.

If anyone is interested in this new, exciting service, please view the link above and/or email youwriteon@legendpress.co.uk

...And now Europe

EuropemapWell, not quite but never mind. Due to the wonderful world of Tim Berners-Lee (only found out last year that was the name of the guy who invented the internet revolution), we find Legend Press appearing in the most random of places.

In this case it was amusing, and also quite pleasing, to see that we made one of last year's European Booksellers Federation newsletters – 'United Kingdom: Half of Readers Buy Online', which was from the results of a survey we ran that got a lot of trade press etc.

Funny to think that from little Legend Press, the company was being read about through the European Booksellers Federation - things have moved very fast and will hopefully continue to do so as the Legend Press word spreads!

Legendary author blog in the Telegraph

Tcuk_400x82_normalWe've had a fantastic response so far to our Legendary authors blog - seems to be proving a big hit and rightly so (thanks to the authors for making it so interesting and entertaining). And I was pleased to see details even made it into the Telegraph (of of the few papers we haven't been covered in before - so another ticked off). Nice to see it making such a mark and hopefully it will continue going from strength-to-strength and grow into something very unique and special.

Some pictures from my Ireland trip

Had a great, though very busy day-and-a-half in Dublin. Some exciting developments and look forward to Legend Press's great titles, current and future, making a big splash in the Irish market as well as here in the UK. Though of course, particularly being first time in Dublin and not getting the chance to visit new places as much as I would like recently being so busy, I found time for a brief bit of exploring. Doesn't really do it justice, but just as a brief taste...

From the Tu'penny Bridge (for some reason always like views down the rivers - must be the water meant to be calming...)

Image038
I wanted to Legend Press to make it's mark, but a very welcoming someone had even carved my initials into the concrete. Well, after rushing around it amused me (maybe just me).

Image039
Couldn't come to Dublin and not hunt out Oscar Wilde's house - one my all-time most wittiest heroes. Well, here it was.

Hope to be back again in Dublin very soon and promise I will record more this time!

Off to Ireland

ImagesI'm flying to Ireland first thing tomorrow morning (Sunday) for meetings all day Monday with the Irish book chains and some of the main independents. The Irish book market is very interesting at the moment and with Legend Press's growing list and profile it is time the Legendary publishing revolution spread to Ireland in addition to the UK. Should hopefully be a big step forward for the company.

Look forward to meeting all the buyers, to working with them and seeing our great books in the shops, and also to a pint or two of the Irish speciality while I'm over there.
